Starting with a community calendar

Finding out what was happening kept coming up as a problem in the Greek community in South Australia. Demetre and Victoria, the co-presidents of the Adelaide University Greek Club at the time, started sharing a monthly calendar on Instagram. It was popular from the beginning.

Demi, the club’s marketing coordinator, later took on the design of the calendar and did a fantastic job with it.

Reaching more of the community

As the calendar grew, Greek Youth of South Australia took it on and began collaborating with both university Greek clubs in SA to reach more people on Instagram. I led that changeover, with Demetre finding and collating events and Victoria preparing and publishing the posts.

Eventually, we moved from monthly to fortnightly calendars. There were more events to cover, and we wanted to make sure they were included.

Taking it beyond Instagram

I realised we were limiting ourselves by keeping everything on Instagram. I wanted a dedicated place people could go to find events, and an opportunity to take the idea beyond South Australia.

That became Greek Events. I built the website as a personal project, rather than client work. The aim is to show how much is happening in Greek communities across Australia and help people discover events in their own city or elsewhere.

Where it is today

The website lists events across Australia, though coverage is still limited. I run it myself and manually add events as I find them, so the listings are gradually growing.

There’s plenty more I want to do with it. Organiser submissions are a future step, so people will be able to add their own events. For now, I’m focused on building up the listings and making the site a useful place to discover what’s on.
